Before hiking into the moutains, tourists can read up on the presence of livestock guardian dogs using the map above (click on the purple areas for more detailed information). Generally these dogs guard the sheep flock during the whole summer period, which spans, on the lower altitudes, from mid-May to the end of September.

This map only shows the Alps on which official livestock guardian dogs are working (i.e. livestock guardian dogs that meet the requirements of the Federal Office for the Environment) or livestock guardian dogs recognised by the canton (Grisons).
